Sleep Startle

Greyhounds are known for their deep sleep, which can lead to "sleep startle" or "sleep aggression."

This isn't true aggression but rather an instinctive, startled reaction to being suddenly awakened. As sighthounds, they have quick response instincts that can trigger a defensive reaction like a growl, snap, or lunge, often accompanied by confusion.

This behaviour stems from their deep sleep state, where abrupt disturbances bypass usual processing and trigger an automatic ‘fight or flight’ response. It's especially common in rescue greyhounds due to potential past trauma or environments with sudden disturbances.

To minimise sleep startle, approach a sleeping greyhound gently and verbally, avoiding sudden movements or loud noises. Calling their name softly and allowing them to wake on their terms is best. Providing a quiet, safe sleeping space where they're undisturbed also helps. By respecting their need for rest, owners can reduce these startling reactions.
