So, you are thinking of adopting a greyhound?
Here’s what you need to know.
Greyhounds are truly wonderful companions, and at Home Run Hounds, we know they bring so much joy. However, welcoming one into your home often requires a period of adjustment.
These gentle hounds typically require time, patience, and understanding to settle into domestic life and get accustomed to new experiences, including other dog breeds, traffic, and the general hustle and bustle of a home.
Are you ready for a lifestyle change?
Welcoming a dog into your home, especially a rescue Greyhound, will inevitably change your daily routine. Are you prepared for these adjustments, which include regular feeding schedules, potty breaks, and dedicated exercise?
If you work away from home, you'll need to consider how your Greyhound will be cared for during the day. While family, friends, or neighbours might be an option, have you considered professional help and the associated costs if these aren't available?
Can you provide daytime care?
It's important to remember that most greyhounds have spent their lives primarily in environments with other Greyhounds.
Consequently, many don't cope well in typical all-breed ‘doggy daycare’ settings. These environments, with their large packs of various breeds, can be very stressful for greyhounds. They may not be safe around other breeds, especially smaller or fluffy ones.
For a greyhound, it's generally much better and safer to have a sighthound-savvy pet sitter or dog walker who can provide one-on-one care and attention in your home.
This personalised approach is far less overwhelming than being expected to live among a large, diverse group of dogs.
Settling in.
You may want to take a week or two off work when your new greyhound first arrives. This dedicated time allows you to help them settle in and build a bond. Will you be able to make arrangements for this initial settling-in period?
Garden access and walks.
If you don't have a garden, are you prepared for frequent walks, regardless of the weather? This includes potential nighttime outings if your dog wakes up and needs to go to the toilet.
While many greyhounds adjust to home life within a few weeks, some can take many months to acclimatise. Being prepared for this longer adjustment period is crucial.
Honesty is key!
When you connect with an adoption group like Home Run Hounds, it's important to be completely open and honest about your home environment, lifestyle, working hours, any other pets or children, and your expectations.
This transparency allows the adoption group to help you find the perfect greyhound match for your family
